Vision changes during pregnancy are completely  normal. They can occur at any stage of pregnancy. They  can however be the cause of an underlying medical condition that may need treatment. If vision changes are bothering you, talk to your health care provider to find out if you need treatment.

Causes of vision changes  during pregnancy ?

 

Fluid retention is common during pregnancy. It can change the shape and thickness of the cornea. These changes may result in blurry or distorted vision. This problem usually resolve itself after pregnancy or after you stop breastfeeding. Hormonal changes and blood circulation can all affect eyesight during pregnancy.

 

What other vision problems may occur during pregnancy?

 

Other vision changes that can occur during pregnancy include the following :

  • dry eyes
  • diabetic retinopathy usually worsens during pregnancy
  • glaucoma may however get better during pregnancy
  • ptosis (drooping eyelids) may also occur during pregnancy due to stress or hormonal fluctuations

 

What symptoms may be a cause for concern ?

 

Vision changes  during pregnancy may sometimes be the cause of an underlying medical condition. Other symptoms that you may experience include the following :

  • double vision
  • blurry vision
  • floaters
  • sensitivity to light
  • temporary loss of vision

 

If you experience serious vision problems during pregnancy. It could be a sign of serious medical conditions such as preeclampsia especially if symptoms are accompanied by headaches, abdominal pain, nausea and swelling of limbs and face.

How can vision changes be managed during pregnancy ?

 

Dry eyes : Artificial tears can be used  to lubricate the eyes and ease dryness. Read  the label of your contact lens to make sure lubricants can be used with it. You have to check with your doctor if the active ingredients are safe to use  during pregnancy.

 

Blurred vision : You do  not have to do anything to blurred vision. However if your vision is significantly altered, talk to your health care provider. He may need to change your prescription if you wear glasses. You may also need to get lasik surgery or content lens.

 

Call your health care provider if you experience these symptoms.
