Sinus infection is called sinusitis. It is inflammation of the lining of one of the four nasal cavities. This may be as a result of inflammation and nasal obstruction which inhibits the proper drainage of mucus. Having a sinus infection during pregnancy may tempt you to take medication for relief, however you should note that some medications are not safe to use during pregnancy.There are however home remedies that may relieve your symptoms.

 

What are the causes of sinus infection ?

 

The most common contributing factor of a sinus infection is a cold even though bacteria, virus and fungi may also cause this infection.

 

What are the symptoms of sinus infection ?

 

Symptoms of sinus infections include the following :

  • nasal obstruction
  • congestion
  • thick, yellow foul- smelling post nasal drip
  • fever
  • cough
  • headache
  • pressure or pain around the eyes or face
  • a cold that gets worse and wont go away

 

What medications can I take to alleviate sinus infection during pregnancy ?

 

Acetaminophen ( Tylenol ) is generally  considered safe during pregnancy to relive pain and fever. Short-term decongestant, expectorants, antihistamine and cough suppressants for upper-respiratory infections are also regarded as safe during pregnancy when used in limited quantities.

 

NOTE : You SHOULD AVOID aspirin or  ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, etc…).

 

You need to talk to your doctor about medications that are safe during pregnancy. It is better to limit your medication use during pregnancy.

 

What home remedies can relieve sinus infection during pregnancy ?

 

These home remedies may help alleviate symptoms  of sinus infection.

 

Stay well hydrated by drinking lots of fluids such as water, broth or citrus juice. This will help clear stuffy nose and fight infection.

 

Elevate your head using a couple of pillows  while lying down to make breathing easier. You may also use nasal strips to open your nasal passages.

 

It is better to use a humidifier at night to help open your nasal passages.

 

Get plenty of rest and sleep to help your immune system fight the infection.

 

Gargle salt water made of (1/4 tsp salt per 8 ounces of water) to relief sore throat. You may also drink warm liquid or suck on ice.

 

It is also essential to eat small portions of meals throughout the day even if you have lost apetite.
