What is urinary tract infection ?
Urinary tract infection is also known as bladder infection. Urinary tract infection is infection of the urinary tract system which comprises of
- the kidneys
- ureter
- the bladders
- urethra
Infections are however common in the urethra and bladder.
What are the causes of UTI during pregnancy ?
UTI is caused by bacteria. When the bacteria enters the urinary tract, they multiple and cause pain and irritation.
Ways in which bacteria enter the urinary tract infection include the following :
- sexual intercourse
- use of catheters
- partial blockage of the urinary tract
- wiping stool from back to front into the vagina after bowel movement
Is urinary tract infection common during pregnancy ?
Yes. This is because changes in the urinary tract during pregnancy. The urethra is located directly on the bladder. During pregnancy, the increased weight of the ureter can block urine drainage from the bladder causing infection.
How do I know I have urinary tract infection ?
Symptoms of UTI include the following :
- frequent urination or urgent urination
- burning sensation during urination
- difficulty urination
- lower abdominal pain
- blood and mucus in urine
- foul smelling or unusually strong urine
- cloudy looking urine
- fever, chills, sweats or incontinence
- pressure and discomfort in area of bladder
How is urinary tract infection going to affect my baby ?
Untreated UTI may lead to kidney infection. Kidney infection may lead to premature labor and low birth weight. However if UTI is treated early and properly it will cause no harm to the baby.
It can be treated safely with antibiotics during pregnancy. Your doctor may prescribe a 3-7 day course of antibiotics that is safe for you and the baby. Call your doctor immediately if you exeprince signs of UTI.
How can I prevent urinary tract infection during pregnancy ?
Take these precautions to prevent UTI during pregnancy .
Drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water every day. You can also drink unsweetnened cranberry juice.
Wipe yourself from front to back after using the bathroom.
Empty your bladder as soon as you feel the need to urinate and empty your bladder completely.
Urinate shortly before and after intercourse.
Do not douche.
Wash the genital area with warm water before sex.
Do not use strong soaps, douches, antiseptic creams, feminine hygiene sprays, and powders.
Take shower instead of baths.
Wear cotton underwear and change underwear everyday.
Avoid tight fitting clothing.
