dROOLING AND YOUR BABY 

Drooling and blowing bubbles is common in babies. It occurs during the phase when getting what they need is centered on the mouth. It is more apparent at 3 to 6 months of age. Increase salivation which indicates the appearance of a tooth seems to soothe tender gum. However, if the baby is drooling and lot and looks sick, he may have trouble swallowing and require medical attention.

The role of saliva

Drooling fulfils important factors for your baby.

  • Softens and moistens food once solids are part of your baby’s food.
  • Keeps the baby’s mouth moist.
  • Makes it easier for your baby to swallow.
  • Washes away food residue.
  • Protects your baby’s teeth.

 

WHAT causes drooling in children

Drooling in babies is caused by the following:

  • Teething
  • Continuous open mouth posture which can be habitual or due to a cold or blocked nose
  • Food mostly acidic in nature can trigger drooling.
  • Concentrating keenly can let children lose their self-awareness making them unable to swallow saliva causing drooling.

Drooling can also be due to neurological problems caused by :

  • Side effects of medications 
  • Neurological disorders such as Cerebral palsy and Bell’s palsy.

If your child is suddenly drooling, can’t speak and is having trouble breathing, she may be chocking on food or a foreign object. Call 911 or your local emergency services immediately. While you wait for them, follow first aid procedures for choking.
