What is early intervention E1?

Early intervention is a federal grant program run by individual states under Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act that works with children ages 0-3. This program is also referred to the “Program for Infants and Toddlers with Disabilities. It targets children who show a delay in cognitive, social or communication skills. These children may also have a delay in physical or motor abilities or selfcare.

 

WHo can refer a child to EI ?

Anyone can refer a child to Early intervention including the following :

  • Pediatrician 
  • Parents 
  • Caregivers 
  • Grandparents

A child does not need a diagnosis to be referred to EI. The team of specialist at the EI program will test and evaluate each child to see if they qualify.

Individualized Family Service Program (IFSP)

After the initial evaluation, if your child is found eligible for the EI program, you will receive an IFSP which explains the services recommended for your child and how EI will help you and your family support your child.

  • Speech therapist 
  • Social workers 
  • Physical therapist
  • Occupational therapist 
  • developmental therapist 
  • Registered dietician
  • Psychologist

Services may be provided in your home or the community.

Payment for EI depends on the state. however all states should provide some services free of charge.

Early intervention is important in the early treatment of autism ASD and other developmental problems. The program has been shown to be beneficial for socially disadvantaged kids who do not have ASD and leads to less need for special education services for those children later on.

Early intervention helps in the overall family function and improves the outcome for children who have a biologically based disorder such as an ASD.
