Tips for bottle feeding
- Do not prop the bottle and let the baby feed alone. It increases the danger of choking. It is not recommended to use a device to hold the bottle as this is also dangerous.
- Most babies prefer milk that is warmed to room temperature. Warm the bottle by placing it in a bowl of hot water. Sprinkle a few drops on your wrist to make sure its not too hot.
NOTE
Never warm a bottle of formula or human milk in the microwave. The bottle itself may feel cool while the liquid inside can be very hot.
- Make sure the nipple hole is the right size.
- Try different nipple shapes to see which one your baby prefers.
- Angle the bottle so that your baby is not sucking in air.
- It is important not to let your baby sleep while sucking on a bottle of milk especially if he’s teething. Milk pooled in your baby’s mouth can cause serious tooth decay, known as nursing-bottle caries.
