It may be milk : You need to check how frequently the white coating appears. If it comes and go after feeding, it may simply be milk residue. You can wipe this off the baby’s tongue easily with a soft dry or damp cloth. If the skin of the baby’s tongue is pink and looks healthy after the residue disappears, then no further treatment is required.
It may be thrush : Your baby may have thrush if white, blotchy spots appear on the inside of the baby’s cheeks and roof of the mouth as well as the tongue. This yeast infection Albicans usually invades the mouths of newborns or babies less than 2 months old. A newborn can get this condition through the following ways.
- Passing through the birth canal.
- Treating infections in infancy with certain antibiotics .
- Breastfeeding
Thrush on a baby’s tongue resembles cottage cheese or curdled milk. It may reveal raw, red or even bleeding areas when wiped away. Babies who have thrush usually show persistent discomfort during feeding.
How is thrush treated ?
Mild cases of thrush may disappear on their own while more severe ones may require an anti fungal agent. The doctor usually prescribe Nystatin drops for baby or topical anti-fungal lotions to treat the yeast infection. However oral thrush is rarely severe and easily treatable.
