Drooling is common especially when a baby is teething. All that saliva can give your child drool rash which is a raised , red rash most commonly found on the face . It can also extend to the neck and chest if your child drools a lot. This rash is harmless, however there are ways to clear it up.
How to clear up drool rash
You should keep the baby’s skin clean to improve drool rash. A clean, cloth diaper or baby washcloth is absorbent and gentle and wont irritate already sensitive skin. You have to focus on all affected areas. Use warm water and gently pat the skin dry. Rubbing it will further irritate the skin. Don’t forget about the folds in your baby’s neck. Be sure to get the baby’s skin completely dry after washing it.
Use protective lotion
Discuss with your doctor about applying hypoallergenic cream or ointment with lanolin to the affected areas of the baby’s skin. Be sure to choose products made for babies and that is safe to use on her face and around her mouth. You have to cover all the rash with the lotion and rub it in so well that none of it can get on the child’s hand into her mouth. The cream provides a barrier between the baby’s skin and the irritating drool.
How to prevent drool rash
Your baby’s drool can soak her sheets. Sleeping with the wet sheet and rubbing his face on them can worsen the drool rash. You can place an absorbent cloth like a diaper cloth or towel underneath the sheet to soak up the moisture. You should avoid placing it on top of the sheet. The baby could become tangled in it. You can also apply lanolin cream before bed to protect the the skin while the child sleeps. Keep an absorbent bib on the baby during the day to help protect the chest from drool. Change the bibs as it becomes soaked.
When to worry
You should be concerned if the rash on your baby’s face seem to be itchy or painful or doesnt clear up with any of the treatments listed above. Other conditions such as scabies and eczema can cause this condition and require medical treatment. Do not apply medicated product over your baby’s delicate skin.
