Handling a newborn can be intimidating for some people. This is because newborns are fragile and need to be handled carefully. Here are some basic tips to remember when handling a newborn.
- Wash your hands : You need to wash your hands or use a hand sanitizer before handling a newborn. Newborns have an increased risk for infection due to their immature immune system. It is therefore important that anybody who handles them have clean hands.
- Never shake a newborn whether in a play or out of frustration : Skaking the baby can lead to bleeding in the brain or even death. you should never shake a baby with the intention of waking him up. You can either tickle your baby’s feet gently or gently blow on his cheeks.
- Support the baby’s head and neck : When carrying your baby upright or laying your baby down, you need to support his head. You should also cradle the head when carrying your baby.
- It is important ensure that the newborn is securely fastened into the car seat, stroller or seat belt : Try to limit activities that can be too rough or bouncy.
- You have to remember that newborns are not ready for rough play such as throwing in the air .
