Yeast infection also known as candidiasis is an infection caused by yeast on the skin or mucous membrane. It is caused by Candida albicans yeast, which is a type of fungus, Yeast is usually harmless but may cause an infection when the skin is damaged or when conditions are warm and humid or when a child has a depressed immune system. In very sick children, the infection can can affect deeper tissues or get into the bloodstream and cause serious infection.
What causes vaginal eat infection.
Having small amounts of Candida on the skin and inside the mouth, digestive tract, and vagina is normal. However the yeast sometimes overgrow and lead to symptoms of yeast infection . This can occur in the following circumstances.
- A girl has weakened immune system from an illness or medication such as chemotherapy.
- A girl takes antibiotics for bacterial infections.
- A girl has high blood sugar
- A girl wears clothing especially underwear that are too tight or made of nylon that can trap moisture and heat.
Yeast inefction of the vagina is known as vulvovaginal candidiasis.
What are the signs of vaginal yeast infection in children ?
Signs of vaginal yeast infections include the following :
- Pain
- Itching
- Redness
- A thick white vaginal discharge
- Painful urination
- Sometimes whitish patches on the skin of the vaginal area.
How is vaginal yeast infection treated ?
This infection is treated with a prescription medication taken either by mouth or a vaginal cream, tablet or suppository. This medication will clear up the symptoms in a few days and infection within a week. If your child is not feeling better within a few days of completing the treatment, he should see the doctor.
How can vaginal yeast infection be prevented ?
There is no way to prevent this infection. However it is important to wear breathable underwear and loose clothing and avoid vaginal sprays and douches.
If your child is diabetic, keep the blood sugar levels in control. If you think your daughter has yeast infection, seek your doctor’s advice.
