What is induced lactation ?
A number of adoptive mothers are interested in breastfeeding their babies through induced lactation.
How breastfeeding can be induced.
Prescription medication : No medication specifically designed to induce lactation have been approved by the FDA. However a few medications prescribed for other reasons such as the drug metoclopramide has been shown to stimulate or increase milk production. These medication may have side effects so the doctor will review your medical history before prescribing them.
Herbal medications : Mothers in the United States and other countries have used herbal medication either in teas or capsules to stimulate or increase milk production. Ask your doctor or lactation specialist about herbal medication before considering their use. Herbal medications are not regulated in the United States for content , purity or possible contamination.
Nursing supplement : You cannot predict whether your milk production will be enough to meet your baby’s needs. Many adoptive mothers happily breastfeed with the aid of a nursing supplementer that provides donor breast milk or formula.
Stimulation : You must include regular nipple and breast stimulation with a breast pump every 3 to 4 hours hours even if you’re taking medication to induce breastmilk. Once the baby arrives, she can be encouraged to suckle at the breast, initiating a breastfeeding relationship while further stimulating milk production.
Start the process before the baby arrives : Talk to your doctor and start the process before the baby arrives. Milk production can take an average of 4 weeks to begin after you start pumping . The stress of adoption can also disrupt the milk production process.
