Here are some points to keep in mind as you communicate with your child.
- Listen carefully
- Make and keep eye contact
- Show respect for her ideas and feelings. You should stay away from sarcasm, hurtful teasing, blaming, belittling, and fault-finding.
- You should try and use “I” messages and avoid “you” messages and put-downs.
- Look for the underlying message in what your child is saying. You should check out the child’s emotional tone.
- Be honest
- Be sensitive about where you talk to your child and what time you talk to her. Choose a quiet, private area to talk to the child.
- Reward or praise your child time to time when she shows good listening. She may be motivated to listen more carefully and follow through when she realizes her efforts are being noticed.
