Dealing with spitty babies can be difficult. However with time, a good number of spitty babies outgrow it. Whether your child’s reflux warrants medical intervention or just waiting for the child to outgrow, there are simple tips that can help you deal with this condition.
Remedies for spitty babies
- Avoid overfeeding : If you fill your baby’s stomach too full or too fast, it is going to spurt right back out at you. You can prevent overfeeding by feeding your baby smaller amounts more frequently.
- Get rid of excess gas : Excess gas in the stomach can contribute to spitting in babies. This is because as gas escapes, it has the tendency of bringing the rest of the stomach contents with them. You can minimize this by trying to burp the baby often , not only after but during meals.
- Check the formula : If you are formula feeding and your baby is spitting a lot, you may want to check his formula. Some babies fare better on one formula than the other without having any symptoms of allergy or intolerance. However a small percentage ( about 5% of babies ) are genuinely unable to handle the proteins found in soy or milk formula. This condition is known as milk-soy protein intolerance or MSPI. Spitting may be one of the cues that your baby may give you along with other symptoms such as irritability, gassiness, poor feeding and changes in poop. If this is the case, then its time to talk to your doctor about changing formula to one that your baby can tolerate.
- Take the pressure off : Pressing your baby’s belly can increase your chance of stomach content coming up. Tummy time is important . However it is important to wait a while after the baby eats before doing it. You need to keep your baby upright for 20 to 30 minutes after meals.
- Have a little oatmeal with the milk : It is not recommended to give babies cereal before 6 months of age. However there is one possible exception. Babies and children with dysphagia or reflux may need food to be thicker in order to swallow safely or reduce reflux.
