Is it normal for babies with hiccups all the time ?

 

Hiccups is common in babies under the age of 1 year. Babies even hiccup while in-utero. Hiccups are sudden contractions of the diaphragm caused by irritation or stimulation of the muscles. Infant hiccups are usually caused by full stomach, taking in too much air during feeding or sudden changes in temperature. It usually doesn’t bother the baby. There is no need to see your pediatrician unless it interferes with daily activities and sleep.

Babies with gastroesophageal reflux disease  may hiccup more frequently.  You should mention to your doctor if your baby hiccups often especially if she spits and cough a lot and seem very cranky.

 

You should also see your doctor if your baby hiccups uncontrollably, happen very frequently and occur often after the age of 1. In rare cases, unusual hiccups may be a sign of a serious underlying medical condition.

 

Don’t worry about frequent hiccuping in babies. They will outgrow it in no time.
