Bottle mouth syndrome  is a special form of tooth decay in very young children.  It  is caused by prolonged exposure to milk and sugary liquids. Your child is at risk of this condition is she takes a bottle of milk or juice to bed at naptime and bedtime.  She is also at risk if she carries milk or  sugary liquids around during the day. It is commonly seen in the upper front teeth. Children with this condition need oral surgery with general anesthesia.

What are the symptoms of bottle mouth syndrome ?

 

Children with this condition  have the following :

  • Red gums
  • Irritated mouth
  • Teeth that do not look normal

What can i do about bottle mouth syndrome ?

 

You can deal with this condition by doing the following :

  • Do not give your child a bottle of milk or juice or any fluid containing sugar during naptime,  bedtime  or to carry around during the day. You should only feed the child at specific meal and snack times.
  • Give your child water after feeding to rinse sugary fluids off the teeth.
  • Don’t give your child a sleep time bottle
