Should i stop worry about SIDS ?
Babies are at high risk of SIDS between the ages of 1 and 4 months. About 90% of SIDS occur in babies under the age of 6 months. By definition, SIDS doesn’t happen after the child’s first birthday .
There has been a decline in death from SIDS after the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended putting babies on their backs. However SIDS is still the number cause of death in babies between the ages of 1 and 12 months. Even though there is no way to prevent this condition, there are steps you can take to reduce your baby’s risk.
Researchers don’t know the causes of SIDS and why the risk drops but it is believed that the baby’s brain development and maturing physical ability could play a role.
As a result, when a matured baby is placed in a sleep environment with loose material and pillows, she my be able to lift her head, shift away or roll over. However this is not the case for newborns and less matured babies.
It is important to follow safe sleep recommendations up to the child’s first birthday .
