Carrying multiples places you in a special category of high risk pregnancy . However this doesnt automatically mean that you will have problems during pregnancy . You will just need to be monitored closely during pregnancy. Most multiple pregnancies go on smoothly if you take good care of yourself.
How to take care of yourself during a twin pregnancy
- Proper nutrition : It is important for women to start taking prenatal vitamins about 3 months before conception. It is known to reduce the risk of neural tube defects such as spina bifida. Taking prenatal vitamins is important but should not be a substitute for food. Eating proper food and the right amount of calories is critical in twin pregnancies. Whereas single-born pregnancies require 300 extra calories a day, most experts agree that twin pregnancies need around 1,000 extra calories a day. It is also important to sip water throughout the day to stay well hydrated.
- Address any symptoms and concerns : Multiples have the risk of being born early. It is therefore important to address concerns early for the safety of the baby. Address signs that may be an indication of preterm labor. Such symptoms include the following:
- vaginal bleeding or discharge
- contractions that are becoming more frequent
- pelvic or lower back pressure
- diarrhea
While bleeding in the first trimester could be a sign of implantation , you should call your doctor anytime you experience bleeding during pregnancy .
Twin pregnancies also increase your risk for preeclampsia, a condition that causes the mother’s blood pressure to be elevated and causes protein to leak into the urine. It can also cause more swelling than normal during pregnancy. If you notice rapid weight gain or headaches, contact your doctor right away.
- It is important to be optimistic and positive during pregnancy. This will help your mental state and as a result help your babies to thrive as long as possible. It is important to take things one day at a time. Eat well and pay attention to your body. Every single day that your baby stays in utero is essential.
