How to encourage healthy sleep habits in children
- Make sleep a family priority : It is important to get enough sleep. How you sleep affects the overall health of you and your children. It is important to make sleep a priority for yourself to show to your kids that its part of a healthy lifestyle.
- Keep a regular routine : Keeping the same schedule for mealtime, nap time, waking time and sleep time will help them feel more secure and comfortable. It will also help with a smooth bedtime. It helps when you start bedtime routine such as brushing of teeth and reading of books early in younger kids.
- Stay active during the day : It is important that kids have varied activities during the day . This should include physical activities and getting enough fresh air.
- Limit screen time : It is essential to keep all screen -TVs, computers, laptops, tablets, and phones out of children’s bedrooms. For undisputed sleep, put off all screens about 60 minutes before sleep.
- Bedroom should be comfortable and sleep supportive : Dim all the lights and make sure the room temperature is comfortable. Avoid filling the child’s bed with toys. One or two items such as a favorite doll or security blanket is okay and can help with separation anxiety.
- Don’t put your baby to bed with juice, milk or formula. Water is okay. Anything other than water can cause baby bottle tooth decay. It is better to feed or nurse your baby, then put her to bed.
- Don’t start giving the babies solids sooner than 6 months : Giving the baby solids will not help them sleep longer. It can rather make them sleep less because they may not be able to digest the food which can cause tummy ache.
- Overscheduling should be avoided : This can make it difficult for kids to sleep . It is important that you give your children time to wind down.
- Take note sleeping problems : Some of the sleep problems include
- difficulty falling asleep
- nighttime awakening
- snoring
- stalling and resisting to go to bed
- sleep apnea
- loud heavy breathing while sleeping
- Consult your pediatrician about sleep problems : If you have any concerns about your child’s sleeping habits, consult your pediatrician.
