Is it safe to take baths during pregnancy ?
It is okay to take baths during pregnancy as long as the water is not too hot. It is important to avoid soaking in water that is hot enough to raise the body temperature higher than 102.2 degrees Fahrenheit for more than 10 minutes. Doing that cause a lot of problems for you and your baby including :
- A drop in blood pressure which can deprive the baby of oxygen and nutrients and increase the risk of a miscarriage
- Dizziness and weakness
- Increased risk of birth defects especially in the first trimester
This is the reason why saunas, steam baths and very hot tubs aren’t recommended during pregnancy. A hot shower is okay but avoid long, steamy ones.
Some pregnancy women worry that bath water will get into the uterus and harm the redeveloping baby. However your baby is protected within the amniotic sac. So unless your water breaks , the baby will not come into direct contact with the water you are soaking in.
NOTE
You can enjoy a bath during pregnancy. Just make sure the temperature of the water is warm and not hot.
