Using hair accessories for babies
You can use hair accessories for your baby’s hair if used in the right manner. When used the right way, they wont damage the roots of the baby’s hair or cause your baby’s hair to fall out.
Using a hair band or clip can be helpful in babies with long hair. It helps prevent the hair from falling on her face and irritating the eyes.
However choosing the right accessory is important especially when the baby is at a stage where she’s pulls her hair and puts them in her mouth. Remove the hair clips when the baby is asleep or you are not around. Your baby can swallow or choke on a clip when she puts it in her mouth.
Tips to help you safely chose hair accessories for your baby’s hair
- Don’t use hair bows that are too small. This is so that even if the child manages to pull it out, she wont be able to put the whole bow in her mouth.
- Don’t use ribbons in your baby’s hair. It can easily undo and the baby can get tangled in it or wrap it around her neck.
- If you are using a hair band, choose soft elasticised cloth hair band that will stay in place and keep hair away from her eyes and face.
- Choose tangle free rubber bands to make pony tails. This will prevent them from getting stuck in the hair so that just in case the baby pulls it out, it wont pull out her hair.
You can protect your baby’s hair by doing the following :
- Don’t comb your baby’s hair when its wet
- Use gentle strokes to reduce the stress to the hair roots while brushing
- Get a wide toothed comb or a hair brush with soft bristles to detangle the baby’s hair
- Don’t tie your baby’s hair tightly. Doing so can lead to hair breakage and loss
