The benefits of baby sign language
Baby sign language is when babies used modified gestures from the American Sign Language . This can be an effective communication tool. Practicing sign language with your child can be fun and give you and your child an opportunity to bond.
Limited research indicates that sign language might give a typically developing child several ways to communicates several months than those who use just vocal language. It is also helpful for children with developmental delays. However more research is needed to determine if baby sign language promotes advanced language, literacy or cognition.
Tips to keep in mind when teaching your child sign language
To start teaching baby sign language , you have to familiarize yourself with the signs through books, websites and other sources. You also have to do the following
- Set realistic goals. You can start baby sign language at any time but you have to remember that most children aren’t able to communicate with baby sign language until about 8 months.
- Keep it simple . Choose signs that are most useful to your child. Start with signs that describe routine request like drink, eat, more, mother and father.
- Make it interactive . Use signs while communicating with your baby. You can also try signing while bathing, diapering, feeding or reading to your baby.
- Be patient . Don’t get frustrated when the child is not using the signs well. The goal is for communication so don’t be obsessed with perfection.
You have to know that even though you’re teaching the baby sign language, it is important to continue to communicate with her . Verbal language is an important part of a child’s development.
