Do canned fruits and vegetables have the same nutrients as fresh ones ?
Frozen and canned fruits and vegetables are generally as healthy as fresh ones even though there may be some small differences in nutrients. However you have to read the ingredients and avoid those with high sugar and salt.
Frozen and canned fruits and vegetables can help dinner get ready a lot quicker but you can never beat the taste of fresh fruits and vegetables especially when they are in season.
Canned and frozen fruits and vegetables are processed at their peak of freshness. As a result it sometimes have more nutrients than the fresh ones especially those that have spent more time on the truck or in your fridge.
Nutrients can also be lost through processing but the amount is usually insignificant.
However you still want to read the ingredient list to make sure you avoid the following :
- Salt : Most frozen vegetables have salt added to it. Choose those which state no salt or if you can’t, those that have low salt.
- Sugar : Most canned fruits come with syrup which you don’t need.
- High caloric sauces : Frozen and canned foods sometimes come with high caloric sauces which you don’t need so choose plain ones instead .
NOTE
Even though fresh produce taste better, frozen and canned varieties provide valuable vitamins and nutrients too. You can also make your own frozen fruits and vegetables by chopping up these produce and storing them in a freezer bags for meals .
