What is causing stains on my child’s teeth

Yellow or orange stains on your child’s teeth may indicate that they are not being brushed very well. As a  result they have developed a build  up of plaque that is stained with food debris. You can remove the stains  by brushing with a little bit of adult toothpaste which has more cleaning power than children’s. You can also use a little bit of baking soda and water. If this doesnt work, the dentist can remove them with professional scrubbing. These stains don’t necesarily mean tooth decay but letting stains accumulate on the teeth can cause gum disease even in children.

Dark stains on your child’s teeth may be due to iron in her multivitamin. If you have these stains, you have to be vigilant and stay on top of it. These stains are difficult to remove even with professional scrubbing from the dentist  once they have taken root. However they wont affect the health of  the child’s teeth.

Baby teeth ( usually a   couple  of them ) can become stained if they are injured in a fall. This type of stain is on the inside and cannot be cleaned off.

If your child has a chronic illness or recurrent high fever or is exposed to certain medications, it may not affect her baby teeth but her adult teeth can come in discolored.
