Helping your shy child transition to kindergarten
It is important to let your child know that it is okay for her to be a little reserved than her friends. Shy kids need a bit more time to adjust to a different environment. It is the job of the parents to make them feel comfortable in a different and challenging environment.
Even if your child has been to preschool , she will definitely need more time adjusting because of her temperament. If she hasn’t been to preschool, daycare or any group settings, it would of course be more challenging and require the parent to help with this transition. You can do this by visiting the school as often as possible before the first day of school. You can also enlist the help of the teacher to make this transition better. You can set playdates with some of her school mates you know before schools starts.
You can also wait a while during the first day of school to help the child put her school supplies away and get familiar with he environment . However do not stay too long. You have to let your child know that you are leaving. Leaving without saying good bye may make matters worse and make your child trust you less. If you say you are leaving, you have to mean it. Prolonged departures may make the situation more difficult for you and your child.
Maintain communications with the school teacher as the school year continues to find out how your child is doing. You and the teacher can work as a team to help the child overcome the shyness.
You should not push a shy child beyond her limit. Look for cues which indicate that she is uncomfortable or cranky and then ease up. If you think a full day might be too much for her, opt for a half day kindergarten if you have the option.
Eventually the child will settle in and have a strong bond with the teacher and new friends. That is important to help her succeed in this area. It is important to value the quiet and thoughtful nature of your child to help her feel good about themselves.
