Fiber is a very important nutrient but most kids are not getting enough of it. Parents try to feed their kids healthy food but sometimes they need a little help when it comes to food that contains fiber.
How much fiber do children need ?
There are different fiber recommendation based on energy needed, age or weight.
- If your children are eating at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables daily along with other foods that are good sources of fiber, then there is no need to count the fiber
- you can keep track of how much fiber your child needs by adding 5 to the child’s age. A 5 year old will need 10 grams of fiber daily. Note that the daily recommended fiber for adults is 25 grams so you can use that as a general guideline for children
Why is fiber essential ?
Fiber makes us full and move things along the digestive tract. Food which are a good fiber sources may help prevent constipation. These foods are also a good source of nutrients and vitamins that may help reduce the risk of heart disease, certain types of cancer and obesity.
What are some good causes of fiber ?
Some of the food sources of fiber include the following :
- vegetables
- fruits
- peas
- beans
- fiber rich whole grain cereal
