After childbirth, the last thing on your mind may be sex. Your body has drastically changed and may need time to heal. It is important to wait for about 6 weeks after delivery to have sex. This will help any tears or incisions to heal and also bleeding and cramping may have stopped around this time. You may also be so overwhelmed with caring for a newborn that you don’t have time for intimacy. There are changes in hormones after childbirth. This can also give you low sex drive.
The stress, fatigue and care that goes into parenthood can leave both you and your partner feeling frustrated and exhausted. These are obstacles you have to work on to get your sex drive back.
Tips to help you and your partner remain intimate after childbirth
New parents may actually have to schedule intimacy. This is because you have to time it when you have help from friends or family members or when the baby is taking a nap.
- lubricants may become very handy around this time especially if you are nursing . This is because low estrogen levels causes the vaginal area to be dry and using lubricants can help have a more enjoyable, less painful sex
- try to nap when the baby naps. It will help you have some energy when the time comes
- know that you are not alone
- try to let little things go. Don’t worry too much about your self image. Eventually you will get back to your pre pregnancy body.
You have to discuss all your concerns with your partner.
