Most families head outdoors during summer. However its hard to stay hydrated in the heat. Here are ways to enjoy the sun and still stay safe and hydrated .
How children get dehydrated
Children are less likely to remember to drink fluids especially when they are having fun outside. They are also more prone to dehydration than adults. They become dehydrated when they drink less fluids than they lose through sweating on a hot , summer day.
How to prevent dehydration in babies
Newborns overheat easily because they cannot regulate their body temperature. It is generally not a good idea to give children younger than 6 months old water. They get all their hydration from breastmilk and formula even in hot weather. Giving children under 6 months water puts them at risk of water intoxication which is over dilution of the bloodstream. This can lead to seizures.
Preventing dehydration in children 12 months and older
It is important to make sure that kids have access to water. You have to encourage a water break after an hour of playing.
Other snacks that have water such as ice pops or ice cones are also okay as long as you watch the total daily sugar and calorie intake.
Water melon also makes a perfect snack on hot days.
