The time a woman’s full fertility returns after taking birth control varies and depends on the birth control method she’s using. Fertility decreases as you age. Irregular period as well as poor health can also decrease fertility. You may have a difficult time getting pregnant after the use any birth control just because you are older than when you started the birth control.
How long it may take to get pregnant after stopping birth control ?
Barrier methods : The barrier method includes the following :
- male condom
- female condom
- diaphragm
- spermicidal foam
- sponge
- gel
- suppository
You can get pregnant the next time you have sex after you stop using this type of birth control.
Combination hormonal method : This includes pills, skin patches and rings. They contain both estrogen and progestin which is synthetic progesterone. You can get pregnant right away after stoping regular or low doses hormonal birth control. About half of women get pregnant about 3 months after stopping the pill and most women get pregnant within 12 months.
Progestin only hormonal pills : This includes pills, the implant (such as Implanon or Nexplanon), and the shot (such as Depo-Provera). You can get pregnant as soon as the implant is removed . It may take about 3 to 18 months after your last shot to get pregnant. The progestin pill is also known as the mini pill. Most people get pregnant within 6 months after stopping use.
Intrauterine devices : Fertility usually returns with the first menstrual cycle in the case of both copper and hormonal IUD.
