It is not uncommon to develop fever during pregnancy or after childbirth. The fever is usually caused by a viral infection. Mild fevers are usually not a cause for concern. However if the fever is not getting better with treatment such as taking acetaminophen or does not improve over several days, it may be an indication of a more serious problem .
When to call your doctor for fever during pregnancy
Call your doctor in the following situations :
- you have a fever and other health risks such as diabetes and other chronic conditions
- if you experience other signs such as abdominal pain, nausea, contractions or a rash with the fever
- get dehydrated
- mild fever that lasts longer than 4 days
- fever with no obvious cause that comes back more than once in 3 weeks
- fever is accompanied by increased in vaginal discharge or bad smell from vaginal discharge
You have to remember that fever is only a symptom. Call your doctor if you have any concerns.
