Nursing shouldn’t be painful. Cracked or bleeding nipples are a sign that there is a problem that needs to be corrected. You need to see a lactation consultant about this problem so that it can be addressed and resolved.
What causes cracked or bleeding nipples
Improper latch is the main culprit . It can be resolved by correcting your nursing technique. A lactation consultant can help you figure this out.
Other causes also include the following :
- using a breast pump incorrectly
- baby has thrush or yeast infection and passes it on to you
- severe dry skin or eczema
- if your baby is tongue tied
What can i do
It important to seek the help of a lactation consultant sooner than later. She can offer practical advice as well as support. Here are some suggestions that may help
- check your baby’s latch : The best latch off -center with more of the areola below the nipple in your baby’s mouth.
- try different nursing positions : Certain positions make it easier for your baby to latch correctly and are much more comfortable than others
- nurse on less injured side first , if you have one
- apply a cold pack to numb the injured area before nursing
Do the following after breastfeeding :
- clean your nipples gently with water to prevent infection. Use a non-antibacterial, non-perfumed soap to gently clean the wound and rinse well with water once a day
- your doctor or lacatation consultant will recommend using an antibacterial ointment if you have an open wound
- rub a small amount of medical-grade modified lanolin made for breastfeeding mothers on the nipples after every feeding
- take painkillers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen about 30 minutes before nursing to help reduce pain and inflammation
- you can try hydrogel dressings designed for nipple healing. These pads soothe and speed healing
What is the effect of cracked or bleeding nipples on my baby
This condition does not bother the baby. She may swallow some blood which may come out in the diaper but wont cause any harm. If she’s got a poor latch, she may not be getting enough milk so you have to check with your doctor.
NOTE
Once you’ve identified and corrected the issue causing your nipple to crack or bleed, you can continue breastfeeding. There is no need to stop unless nursing is just too painful. In this case you can pump for a day and bottle feed your baby to give you a break.
