Studies have shown that  women have less sleep in the third trimester  than in the first and second trimester. Women in their last trimester  have fewer deep sleep  and wake up more often at night.

Why cant your get comfortable ?

 

During this semester , your belly is just too big to allow you to lie down comfortably. If you sleep comfortably  on your left side with pillows wedged between your legs and behind your back , try a comfortable recliner instead.

 

There is pressure on your bladder

 

Your growing baby puts  pressure on your bladder. However you can reduce the number of bathroom visits by cutting down on fluids in the late afternoon and evening.

 

Other causes of sleeping problems in the third trimester include the following :

 

How to survive sleep problems during the third trimester

  • try to use special pregnancy pillow to help you sleep better
  • sleep on your left side to allow adequate blood flow and nutrients to your baby
  • avoid carbonated drinks and sodas if you have legs cramps
  • you should have your blood pressure and protein in your urine checked once you start snoring especially if your legs and ankles are swollen
  • talk to your doctor about iron deficiency if you have restless leg syndrome
  • if you are having trouble sleeping, get a book to read, take a warm bath  or write a journal
  • if you get a leg cramp, straighten your leg and flex your foot upwards . You can do this several times before going to be to prevent future cramps
