Trouble sleeping during the first trimester
Most pregnant women have troubling sleeping during the first trimester. Pregnancy symptoms such as nausea, headaches, frequent urination and heartburn makes it difficult to have a good sleep during the first trimester of pregnancy .
Take a nap
You feel very tired early in pregnancy . High levels of progesterone is responsible for this sudden sleepiness. This hormone can also make you feel worn out. It can prevent you from having a good sleep at night and lead to fatigue during the day. It is important to rest as much as you can and take a catnap whenever you can.
You don’t have a comfortable sleep
Breast tenderness during pregnancy can make it difficult to make get a comfortable sleeping position especially if you sleep on your stomach. The first trimester is the right time to start training yourself to sleep on your left side. This sleep position improves nutrients and blood flow to the fetus and helps your body get rid of waste and fluids.
The need to urinate frequently
The growing uterus puts pressure on the bladder and gives you the urge to urinate frequently. You can drink lots of fluids during the day and cut down on it during late afternoon and evening .
How to survive sleep during the first trimester of pregnancy
- plan , schedule and prioritize sleep
- get extra sleep whenever you can
- drinks lots of water during the day and cut back on fluid intake before bedtime
- eat bland snacks to avoid nausea throughout the day
- nap during the day
- sleep on your side to improve blood flow and nutrients to the fetus
- use a nightlight instead of the main light in the bathroom. This will make it less arousing and make you go back to sleep quickly
