Causes of itchy nipples while breastfeeding
Sensitivity : Nursing moms may have itchy nipples because of hormones, sucking, friction and wetness. Some women are more sensitive than others and may itch more intensively. If you have sensitive nipples , you have to continue to nurse but can also seek relief by applying cold compressions. You can also contact your health care professional to rule out other possible causes.
Cracked skin : It is common for nursing moms to experience dry or cracked skin on or around the nipple while breastfeeding. This may be due to the baby latching on the nipple in an incorrect manner. The side effect of cracked and dry skin is itchiness. Do not ignore itchy nipples which is accompanied by bleeding and severe pain.
If you experience cracked and dry skin, you need to make sure your baby is latching correctly. Get the help of a lactation consultant to help your baby latch correctly.
Infection : If itchy nipples is accompanied by redness, an infection is likely. The most common infection is thrush. If not treated , thrush can be transferred from the mother to the baby and back again. When thrush is present on the nipples, it is likely present inside the baby’s mouth.
How to prevent itchy nipples while nursing
These tips will prevent itchy nipples during pregnancy
- let your breast air dry after nursing and apply freshly expressed milk or lanolin to the area
- avoid washing the breast with soap and water and rub it dry after a nursing session
- after several nursing sessions, you have to wash and pat the area with cool water for cleansing . You can also allow water to run over the breast during regular bath or shower
- change nursing bra as often as possible
- go without a shirt and bra as often as possible
