Is it normal for spit-up to come out of my child’s nose
Spitting up is an effortless return of liquid from the mouth or nose. Your child’s nose is connected to her throat just like everybody else. This causes spit up to sometimes come out from the nose instead of the mouth. It can also come from both the mouth and nose at the same time. This usually occurs because the swallowing process get a little out of balanced when the child hiccups, sneezes or coughs. In this same way , vomit can also come out of the nose. This could also be the result of a medical condition so let your doctor know.
Spitting up is usually harmless. In infants the valve between the esophagus and stomach is immature . As a result it is sometimes unable to keep the stomach contents in place . Your baby can spit up if
- you feed her too much
- she swallows air
- she eats too fast
Your pediatrician can give you advice on how to reduce this in your child.
Most infants stop spitting up around 4 to 7 months . However some children spit up until their first birthday. Even when your child stops spitting up, liquid can still come out of her nose until she gets better at controlling the swallowing process.
This problems may happen in older children but this is normal.
NOTE
If your child is having a hard time swallowing or sucking, have her checked by the pediatrician to make sure she’s not having a soft palate problem. If you child’s spits up large quantities of food after eating , let the doctor know so that she tracks her weight to make sure that she’s gaining weight. The doctor may prescribe mediation to reduce the spitting.
