If your baby has glassy eyes, the eyes may be wide open and the baby may appear to be staring off in space . The eyes may also look white and shiny. Glassy eyes in babies may be caused by the following :
- vision problems
- mild or severe illness
If this condition is accompanied by worrisome symptoms such as changes in the baby’s attitude , call your doctor.
Causes of glassy eyes in babies
Strabismus : This is known as wondering eyes. This condition is usually obvious when tired.
Common cold : This causes the baby’s eyes to appear glassy. If the child is congested, she may become dehydrated which can lead to this condition. Another cause is when the baby is feeling feverish with other symptoms such as teary eyes or runny nose .
Severe illness : Some severe illnesses can cause dehydration and lead to lethargy and glassy eye. Diseases that can cause dehydration include :
- stomach viruses that cause vomiting and diarrhea
- colitis
- high fever
Other diseases that can result in a glassy look include :
- low blood sugar
- pneumonia
When to call your doctor
Call your doctor if the baby has other symptoms such as
- high fever
- stiff neck
- fever
- difficulty breathing
- lethargy
- constant crying
If glassy eye last more than a few days, call the doctor.
