Urate crystals are commonly known as ” brick stains” by doctors. This can be alarming for parents but is perfectly normal in newborns. They are a combination of calcium and urate which are substances found in urine. It usually appears as reddish brick dust powder and can be mistaken as blood in urine. These usually go away on their own. If it persists , you may want to seek your pediatrician’s advice.
What causes urate crystals in a baby’s diaper
This occurs because of highly concentrated urine. It is common in the first week of life especially if the baby is nursing and the mother hasn’t yet produced a good milk
NOTE
If you notice urate crystals in your baby’s diapers , notify her doctor. He will ask you about the baby’s feeding, weight gain and your milk supply. He will ask you for signs of dehydration in your baby such as
- dry lips
- decreased saliva
- going 6 hours without a wet diaper
- lethargy
The doctor may suggest you increase feedings. As long as the baby is not dehydrated, this condition shouldnt cause any concern.
