What is postpartum sweating
Postpartum sweating is common. Most people sweat in the weeks after giving birth and it usually occurs at night. Sweating is one of the body’s ways of getting rid of the extra water retained during pregnancy .
You may also urinate more within the first weeks after childbirth. The emotional stress of motherhood may also cause you to sweat more. Hormonal decline after pregnancy may be a contributing factor. This condition is completely normal however certain factors such as holding your warm baby, hot weather and wearing clingy clothing can make the situation worse.
Nursing mothers may continue to sweat even after the water weight is gone down. The exact reason is not known however hormonal and metabolic changes during breastfeeding may play a role.
Postpartum sweating is normal. If it is accompanied by fever , it may be a sign of an infection. Excessive sweating may also be a sign of other health issues such as overactive thyroid. If you think your sweating is abnormal , contact your health care provider.
NOTE
Postpartum sweating may last for several weeks after delivery . It tends to last longer in nursing moms. You don’t have to cut down of fluids because of postpartum sweating. As a matter of fact drinking water and non alcoholic beverages speeds up the process of elimination of the excess water and prevents dehydration.
You can keep cool and comfortable by wearing lightweight cotton clothing instead of synthetic ones.
