It is exciting when your child starts talking. Children mimic what they hear. It is therefore important to be cautions about what you say or do infront of them. Swearing in children is the result of what they hear around them.  You can just ignore your child  until she loses interest. However if it continues, explain to your child why she should not use those words.

What to do when your child starts swearing

  • Dont overact  : If you make a big scene out of your child using a swear word, she will use it whenever she wants attention or wants  to get under your skin
  • Dont laugh : If your child thinks you find it amusing, she will repeat  it again when she wants to be funny
  • Dont confront your child about a swear  word when she says  it when she’s upset : Wait till your child is calm and talk to her about  not using swear words. Talking about it when she’s upset will make the situation worse
  • Watch your language : Children learn from what they see and hear. If you use swear words  frequently , your child will start using it too
  • Consider your child’s age : Children learning to talk may use swear words  without knowing  it’s  bad. In that case, just ignore the child. Scolding the child may be of no use
  • Children with more developed language : You just want to explain to the child  why it is bad to use  swear words. They are likely to stop using it if you explain that the word is bad
  • Discipling older child : If your child  is old enough and knows that using swear words is bad, then you may want to discipline her when she uses it. You can send her   to time out, take away certain privileges or ground her
  • When you mistakenly say a swear word, apologize for it  : You will be setting a good example for your child
  • Offer fun and more acceptable alternatives to swearing : There are many english words that are not offensive. You can even tell your child to make up her own silly phrase
