Bath time can be fun but you need to take the necessary steps to make sure your baby is safe.
How to keep your baby safe during bath time
- never leave your baby unsupervised even for a minute. Children can drown in less than an inch of water.
- babies easily get chills. Make sure the bathroom is warm and comfortable. The temperature should be around 75 degrees F
- the bathwater should be comfortable . You can test it with your wrist or the inside of your elbow to make sure its not too hot
- make the bath tub safe. Bath tubs can be slippery. A rubber bath mat can help make a more secure seating
- when you use bath ring seat, dont assume your baby needs less security. Babies can tip over and get trapped under them
- avoid bubble baths as they may be irritating to the urethra and result in urinary tract infection
- dont allow your baby to stand in the tub
- you can use plain water to wash your baby as long as the diaper areas and skin folds are well cleaned. Soaps and shampoos can dry the baby’s skin and cause rashes. If you decide to use soap and shampoo, use the one designated for babies and use it sparingly
- dont allow your child to touch the faucets. Even if he cant open it now, he will eventually and that can lead to serious injuries
- adjust your water heater so the hottest temperature at the faucet is no more than 120 degrees Fahrenheit to reduce the risk of burns in children
- keep electrical appliances such as hair dryers away from the tub
- dont store frequently used items like toothpaste , soap, shampoo in the same cabinet. Put them in hard to reach cabinets equipped with locks. You also have to keep all medicines in containers with safety caps and store the medicine in hard to reach cabinets.
