Is it safe to heat formula in the microwave ?
Doctors usually dont recommend heating formula in a microwave because it is not safe. This is because microwave heats food unevenly from the inside out. It is therefore possible that the milk may be very hot in the middle of the bottle but barely lukewarm on the outside. This can scald the baby’s mouth and throat.
To avoid this issue , you can heat a baby bottle under warm running water. You can also set it in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes. Another option you can consider is giving the baby cold or room temperature formula. There is no harm in that. It may even make the transition to cow milk easier since most parents offer milk straight from the refrigerator.
However if you definately want to use the microwave, then just put bottle in it for a few minutes, just enough to make it slightly warm. Then shake it well to distribute the heat.
NOTE
When heating baby formula, always shake the liquid to make sure the heat is evenly distributed and then test it on top of your hand before feeding the baby. If the milk feels lukewarm, then it is ready for feeding the baby.
