A miscarriage presents a series of emotions as well as physical symptoms your body needs to recover from.
It takes a few weeks to a month or more for your body to recover physically from a miscarriage. The recovery depends on how far along you were in your pregnancy .
Some women experience the following symptoms.
- vaginal bleeding similar to menstruation. This may last up to a week after the miscarriage
- light bleeding or spotting
- your normal period may resume in 3 to 6 weeks depending on your normal cycle
- you may experience lower abdominal pain similar to menstrual cramps. This may last up to 2 days after a miscarriage
- breast engorgement, discomfort and leaking may occur. You can use ice pack or supportive bra to relieve the symptoms. This discomfort usually stops within a week
- some pregnancy hormones may remain in the blood one to two months after the miscarriage
How to prevent an infection after a miscarriage
After visiting the doctor, you have to take some steps until the bleeding stops to prevent infection. These include :
- use sanitary pads rather than tampons ( wait until your next period before you use tampons)
- do not douche
- do not go to swimming in pools or hot tubs
- take showers instead of baths
- do not have sexual intercourse
You also have to know that if your doctor prescribes antibiotics, you have to take the full dose of the medication even if symptoms subside.
When can i return to normal activities ?
You can start normal activities as soon as you are able to. However you need to ask your doctor about vigorous and strenuous exercises .
