You can give your baby a pacifier from the get go if you’re not nursing. If you’re breastfeeding ,when you give a pacifier to your baby depends on how much you think it interferes with breast-feeding.
New moms are usually advised by experts not to introduce a binky to babies until breastfeeding is well established to prevent nipple confusion.
The pros and cons of giving your baby a pacifier
Pros
- using it at nap time and bedtime can reduce the risk of SIDS
- soothes a baby
Cons
- may increase the risk of middle ear infection in babies and young children
- may cause nipple confusion if introduced before breastfeeding is established
- if you give the baby a pacifier rather than food when he’s hungry , this could upset the baby and make it more difficult to feed him
- it can be difficult to break this habit
NOTE
If you want your baby to take a binky, you have to offer it by the time he’s one month old but definately not in the first two weeks of breastfeeding . You also have to know that some babies refuse to take a binky.
