Parents play an essential role in making sure children with epilepsy are safe while still allowing then to participate in childhood activities .
Keeping your child with seizures safe at home and in the community?
There are few things you can do to make sure your child is safe in various situations
- teach your family and friends proper first aid about seizures
- let your family and friends know when to call for help
- let your child wear a medical alert bracelet or necklace that says that she has epilepsy
- make sure your child takes her medication on time every day. This is very important
- make sure your child has enough sleep. Not getting enough sleep can lead to seizures
- Share your seizures plan with your family. It will help them know what to if your child has seizures
You can make your home safe for your child by doing the following :
- avoid glass tables
- have a non slip carpet
- place padding on sharp corners, like those on tables and counters
- avoid throw rugs
- have your child sleep on a low lying bed
If your child wanders during seizures, do the following :
- lock and shut doors that leads to outside. You can also put alarms on the doors to alert you if your doors have been opened
- if your older child is ever at home alone, be sure that your neighbor or friend has keys to the house to check on the child anytime
- put a locking safety safety gate at the top of the stairs
NOTE
- children with uncontrollable seizures need to be careful around heat sources . You can keep your child safe by doing the following
- have your child use the microwave which is the safest
- serve hot things right off the stove onto plates
- use the back burner if you use a stove top
- make sure hot liquids have lids
- you also have to be aware of hair dryers, iron and open flames
- do not smoke in the house
- Children who are still having seizures need to be careful around high grounds.
- put carpeting on staircases and at the bottom of stairs to reduce injuries from falls and slipping
- avoid unprotected heights like ladders
