Your newborn’s growth and appearance
From the first month through to the fourth months of life, your baby will continue to grow at the same rate he established during the first week of life . Around this time, babies in general gain between 1 1⁄2 and 2 pounds (0.7 to 0.9 kg) and grow 1 to 1 1⁄2 inches (2.5 to 4 cm). The circumference of the head will increase by about 1⁄2 inch (1.25 cm) each month. These figures are only averages , however they help you keep track of your child’s development.
The soft spots on your baby’s head should still be open and flat . However by 2 to 3 months , the soft spot at the back should begin to close. His head is likely to be proportionally larger compared to the body but this is normal. His body will soon catch up.
Around 2 months of age, your baby will look more round and chubby. He will however begin to develop muscles as he uses his arms and legs more actively. His bones will also grow rapidly and his arms and legs will lose up. His body and limbs will seem to stretch out making him appear leaner and taller.
