The areola is the area around the nipple. During pregnancy the areola becomes darker and larger. This can happen as early as 2 weeks after conception. This may be one of the first breast changes you may experience during pregnancy .
What causes darkened areola during pregnancy ?
This condition is caused by surging pregnancy hormones that prepare the breast for breastfeeding. Some women also notice bumps resembling goose bumps appearing on the perimeter of the areola. These are called Montgomery tubercles. They provide lubrication to the nipples which will be essential when the baby latches on to nurse.
As pregnancy progresses , the areola may grow and color may darken. This change is nothing to worry about. Darker areola usually return to their original color after childbirth. However it is likely to stay as long as you are breastfeeding. For some women, the darkened areola is permanent.
NOTE
Some creams are not safe during pregnancy. It is important to consult your health care provider before applying any cream to your breast to treat skin changes.
