Healthy start is a government supported program. It is a system that offers education , promotes positive birth outcomes and protects the health and well being of all mothers and children. Healthy start is a part of the Maternal and Child Health Bureau and resides in the division of Perinatal services and Women’s Health.
What issues does healthy start address ?
This comprehensive program seeks to invest in the well being of both mother and her developing baby. This includes :
- adequate prenatal care
- reducing barriers to healthcare access
- meeting basic health needs such as nutrition, housing and psychosocial support
- promoting positive prenatal health behaviors
- enabling client empowerment
What are some of the services provided by healthy start ?
This program is administered by local agencies in each state. Services may vary from state to state.
However in most states, the following services are offered.
- breastfeeding and childbirth education
- care coodination
- nutritional services and counselling
- smoking cessation assistance
- support groups
- parenting education and support
- other programs based on individual needs
Who does healthy start serve ?
The program is focused on meeting the needs and serving women who are considered high risk for infant mortality, low birth weight and disparities in perinatal outcome.
In order to qualify for the program , the woman must reside in the program’s targeted area. You may be eligible if you fall into the following category:
- pregnant woman in need of prenatal care
- new moms
- moms with children under the age of 2
