Yes it is okay to breastfeed when you have a fever. It is rare for illness to be transferred through breastmilk. Chances of spreading an infection is higher through contact. Even if you are close to the baby through contact, your breastmilk might actually protect the baby from catching infection from you. This is because the breastmilk carries antibodies that the body produces to protect the baby from catching an infection from you.
If the baby falls sick, breastfeeding will actually help the baby recover fast because of the antibodies in the milk. Unless recommended by the doctor, it is not a good idea to stop breastfeeding while you have a fever.
Paracetamol and ibuprofen are considered safe during breastfeeding. Ibuprofen should be avoided if you have stomach ulcers or asthma. Aspirin should also be avoided while breastfeeding because it can cause problems for your baby when it is passed on to him through breastmilk.
What is the effect of pausing breastfeeding for a while ?
Stopping nursing while you have a fever will lead to your breast being too full. This can cause mastitis which can also worsen the fever. You may also reduce breastmilk supply if you stop nursing for a prolonged period of time. This means you have weaned your baby before he is ready. This can be distressing for the baby and put more stress on you as you recover.
Follow these precautions.
