A reproductive endocrinologist is a fertility specialist who identifies and treat infertility in both men and women. This obstetrician/gynecologist (OB/GYN) physician specialist has training in various aspects of endocrine related disorder related to the reproductive system in both males and females.
If you’ve been trying to get pregnant for a year ( 6 months if you are 35 years or older ), and have not conceived, then you may have to see a reproductive endocrinologist.
What to expect when you visit a reproductive endocrinologist ?
When you visit an reproductive endocrinologist, he will review your medical and family history. He will also review your lifestyle and work habits. The doctor will perform a complete physical exam and may order addition tests. These tests may include the following :
- ovulation test
- test to determine quality and quantity of egg
- testing hormone levels
- anatomy of uterus and fallopian tube
- pelvic ultrasound
Your partner may also be referred for testing.
If there is a problem, you, your partner and your reproductive endocrinologist can decide which treatment option is right for you. Some of the treatment options include :
- surgery to repair parts of you and your partner’s reproductive system
- in vitro fertilization
- controlled ovarian hyperstimulation
