Antibiotics while breastfeeding
The use of oral antibiotics doesnt generally mean the suspension of breastfeeding. If the antibiotic is one that can be given to newborns, then they are safe to take during breastfeeding. Most of these medications produce excessively loose motions in the baby with the appearance of diarrhea. Some infants appear more unsettled with tummy aches or colic. The benefit of breastfeeding your child outweighs the risk of taking this medication.
Those in the tetracycline class are not considered safe during pregnancy. This is because they can permanently stain the teeth on the developing baby. However teeth buds are already formed by the time the baby is born. So tetracyclines are no longer a concern.
However one class is usually avoided during breastfeeding. These are the quinolones. This is because they are believed to be associated with tendon damage when given to adults.
Always consult your doctor if you have any concerns about medications you should take. He will help you choose medications that are safe to take during breastfeeding.
