There are no set rules on how to make your baby’s room safe. However this check list can help ensure that your child’s bedroom is safe for her.

Crib : You can keep your baby  safe in a crib by doing the following :

  • all healthy babies younger than 1 year old should sleep on their backs at nap time and at night to reduce the risk of SIDS
  • keep pillows, quilts, comforters and stuff toys out of the crib. They can cover your baby’s face
  • dont hang anything with ribbons or strings over cribs
  • keep monitor cords well away from cribs and make sure your baby cannot reach window cords
  • tighten all screws , bolts and other hardware securely to prevent crib from collapsing
  • use a crib that meets national standards

Changing table :These will help you keep your child safe on a changing table

  • never leave your child unattended on a changing table
  • keep items within arms reach
  • use safety belts to prevent falls

Other bedroom items

  • keep night lights away from drapes and beddings where they can start a fire
  • install smoke alarms outside every bedroom or anywhere someone sleeps, in furnace areas or on every level of your home
  • install carbon monoxide detectors on each floor of the house
  • the best toy chest is  box or basket without a lid.  However if it has a lid, make sure it has safe hinges that hold the lid open . The chest should also have holes just in case the child gets trapped inside
  • use cool-mist humidifier or vaporizer to avoid burns. Clean it according to manufacturer instructions to avoid bacteria and mold growth
